Our (Many) Trips to Hapuna Beach

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Hapuna Beach is one of our favorite beaches on the Big Island and we’ve been there many times. The parking lot is large, but it fills up quickly, so it’s best to get to Hapuna earlier in the morning (before 9 AM). Locals can park for free but visitors are supposed to pay at the parking machines. This money helps keep the beach and park clean and safe.

The waves at Hapuna are usually small- to medium-sized and great for kids on body boards or for body surfers. Swimmers get exercise out in deeper water by swimming up and down the beach while runners will jog along the sand for laps. The water is usually crystal clear and you can see to the sandy bottom almost anywhere. There are some areas with lava rocks, but you can see them easily and avoid those areas.

The sand at Hapuna is white and great for making sand castles. It’s also easy to dig around in the sand a bit, which kids seem to love to do, but make sure you refill deep holes so that people don’t step in them and twist their ankles or trip.

  • What to Bring: Make sure you bring plenty of reef-safe sunscreen if you’re planning a day at Hapuna. That sun is hot, as is the sand, and you’ll burn quickly — especially if you aren’t used to the Hawaiian sun. Reapply sunscreen every few hours so as not to get burned. We’d also recommend rash guards for young children and as the sun can be brutal on their skin. There are water fountains as well so bring refillable bottles so you stay hydrated! Chairs or towels — items to keep you off the hot sand — are also a must, especially as the day heats up. Many people bring umbrellas or pop-up tents.
  • Snorkeling: Snorkeling is okay at Hapuna; the water is clear but there are only reef fish over near the edges of the cliffsides, and it’s hard to snorkel around those areas if the waves are pumping. Typically, you can see friendly jacks (type of fish) swimming around you even without a mask because the water tends to be so clear.
  • Average Time Spent: 2-4 hours. We typically spend a few hours at Hapuna, although we don’t bring lunch or anything. If you’re bringing lunch or a cooler, it’s easy to spend more time.
  • Beware the Shore Break: Normally, Hapuna is a calm beach with some waves but nothing overly dangerous. When there are high surf advisories in the area however, Hapuna gets a nasty shore break. That is, the waves rise high and crash in shallow water with considerable force. Do not underestimate the shore break. People have broken their necks getting pounded into the sand by these waves. Avoid the areas that the lifeguards mark off as unsafe. Again, normally Hapuna is a great family-friendly beach, but you need to take precautions during high surf advisories.
