Our Trip to Hawi
As far as most places go, Hawi (pronounced ha-vee) is a pretty remote location on the Big Island. It’s a small town at the northern tip of the island and aside from having a few restaurants and shops, there are no big name shops or conveniences. You’re essentially a 45-minute drive from the nearest town (either Waikoloa or Waimea) and a 1.5-hour drive from big stores like Target, Walmart, and Costco.
If you’re interested in art and local artists, Hawi is a perfect location to go shopping for new pieces of all sorts: quilts, paintings, photographs, wooden sculptures, pottery, and more. Some of the boutiques are on the expensive side, but many are reasonably-priced for the quality of artwork you get in return.
Additionally, Hawi has a number of restaurants serving locally-sourced food and 100% Kona coffee. We’ve been to Hawi a few times and would recommend the historic Bamboo Restaurant, Minnie’s, and Kings View Cafe. There are also some beaches and beach parks, but most are rocky and not great for swimming. Lapakahi State Park is a little south of Hawi along the coastline if you’re interested in a bit of Hawaiian history.
